Church Reconciliation And The Sinner: A Bit More Harmful Than You Thought It Was

Last Sunday I had the excellent luck to listen to an exceptional sermon built around Paul's letter to the Galatian church. Galatians is one of my favorite books due to the fact that it is pretty much all about living the Christian life by means of the Holy Spirit. As a previous "fundamentalist" I am a specialist on living life by means of ordinances and ordinances, and I am deeply cognizant of the spiritual death that results. The sinner and church reconciliation was a regular field of discourse, not to say debate, in those congregations. Hold on for some rough facts!

The preacher introduced his analysis by discussing Paul's initial orders to the church in chapter 6: "Brethren, if any person is trapped in any sin, those of you who are spiritual, rehabilitate such a one in a spirit of kindness; each of you looking to yourself, to make certain you too will not be enticed." We are aware that Paul is talking about Christians who are "caught...in...sin" due to the fact that he demands that they be reestablished in the church, and Paul would not have reckoned non-Christians to have anything to be restored to.

The main reason that confronting the sinner amid Christians is so problematic is that everything that is biblically expected of us is offensive to to the flesh. The flesh is not comfortable with conflict and, when it is perceived, calls up "fight or flight" responses. Biblical values, on the contrary, require us to stay involved and be submissive. Here are three specifics from Galatians 6:1 to bear in mind:

1. Not taking any notice of the offender is not optional. "if any person is caught out in any sin... restore such a one." This is an order. We may not overlook and we are not permitted banish, other than as as a last recourse.

2. The purpose of confronting sin is to restore. "...restore such a one." Even Matthew 18:15-18, which ends in possible dismissal from the church, has restoration as its main intent: The beginning phase of confrontation finishes: "...if he listens to you, you have won your brother." The following steps contemplated are clearly supposed to have the same consequence. Even when the church is constrained to "he should be like a Gentile and a person who collects taxes," we must infer that the intention is to make clear to the sinning Christian what he is losing by declining to confess his sin. If and when he does so the church will get started on the strategy of restoration that is the antithesis of the course of action that contributed to his banishment. In the same way, Paul tells the Corinthian church that there is a man or women among them whose sin is so evident that "I have made the decision to present people like that to Satan for the ruination of the body, so that his spirit may be be spared at the judgement of of the Lord Jesus." Note that Paul's goal is that the individual at some point be "saved."

3. You must have the proper grounds to be eligible to confront. "... you people who are spiritual, bring back such a one in a spirit of meekness." Irritation and discontent are unsatisfactory grounds for church reconciliation and wholeness.

Any time we notice ourselves reacting to Christian sin within the congregation with anger, pride, tension or dread, we need to at once be aware that the individuals or church concerned are in jeopardy from both the sin and the reaction to the sin. We are not eligible to even embark on talking about the sin until we have attended to our responses to it. We have to pray and yield our reactions to the control of to the Holy Spirit until we can really state that we are able to fight the sin but reconcile with the sinner.
